streamlining connections - pre-conference workshop

Join the Streamlining Connections team and experts from across the industry to help improve the efficiency of network connections of distributed energy resources (DER) and load across Aotearoa.

It has been identified that there are currently challenges for prospective proponents wanting to connect new DER or large loads to distribution networks across Aotearoa, New Zealand. These issues include inconsistencies in connection processes between networks and a lack of clarity for proponents.

As a result, the Electricity Authority (EA) are collaborating with the Electricity Networks Aotearoa (ENA) and the Electricity Engineers Association (EEA) on the Streamlining Connections Programme to improve the consistency and efficiency of network connections across the country. This includes, reviewing and updating Part 6 of the Electricity Industry Participation Code 2010, establishing standardised technical settings and requirements for connection; and establishing common connection processes to be used by all EDBs. This work does not include connection pricing.

In this workshop, we will outline the combined work plan of this project and we will be seeking your input and thoughts on our proposed work and any potential issues we should consider adding to our project to improve the connection process for DER and large loads into the New Zealand’s energy system.

Tuesday 10th September, 1.45pm – 5pm, Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre

Hosted by EEA and supported by the Electricity Authority, Energy Network Aotearoa, Flexforum and FlexTalk.

Workshop Highlights:

  • Engagement:
    • Electricity Authority: Hear from and engage with the Electricity Authority regarding their consultation paper to be released in August 2024, that outlines their proposal to improve the efficiency of network application processes. The Authority is proposing changes to Part 6 Connection of distributed generation of the Electricity Industry Participation Code (the Code).
    • ENA: Engage with ENA regarding their work program to deliver process improvements (e.g., pre-application processes, queueing and managing policies) for distributors and access seekers to adopt.
    • EEA: Engage with EEA on our work that will set out the technical requirements and settings for proponents and EDBs to best connect distributed generation and loads to the grid as well as manage power quality. For household DER, they would outline the minimum technical functionality requirements for devices and HEMS.
  • Expert Insights: Hear from industry experts to get insights into current connection issues and possible solutions and pathways on how these might be applied in the NZ context.
  • Interactive Sessions: Be part of interactive activities focused on testing options to improve current connection processes.

This workshop is suitable for anyone working with connection arrangements or interested in distributed generation and participating in the electricity market.

Don't miss this opportunity to be part of forming a more streamlined common connection process for Aotearoa. Seats are limited, register now to secure your spot!

There is no registration fee to attend as the event is sponsored by EEA and supported by the ENA (Future Networks Forum), the Electricity Authority, and FlexTalk Project. However, registration is required for catering and limited number of seats available.
