We’re seeking a versatile and skilled professional to lead our switching and substation operations, carry out technical testing, and contribute to the safe and efficient operation of our network. This hands-on role offers a great mix of workshop and field-based work, giving you the chance to apply your skills across a range of settings while sharing your knowledge and supporting the development of others. Whether you’re an experienced electrical fitter looking to broaden your skills or a technician ready for a new challenge, we’d love to hear from you.
Why Waipā Networks?
We’re a community-owned electricity distribution business, supplying more than 60,000 people across Cambridge, Te Awamutu, and surrounding rural, urban, and industrial areas. We’ve historically operated an 11kV-only network — but not anymore. With a growing district and major network upgrades underway, now is the perfect time to join.
Key benefits of the role
- Relocation support within New Zealand for the right candidate
- Competitive pay and tool-of-trade vehicle
- Flexible working arrangements
- The ability to purchase additional annual leave to support work-life balance
- Fully funded health insurance cover for you and your family
- Fully funded life insurance, equivalent to twice your base annual salary
- A tight-knit, skilled team committed to safety, learning and doing the job right.
The role
Waipā Networks is expanding fast. With our very first 33kV substation nearing commissioning, we’re building a brand-new network from the ground up. This is a rare opportunity to join at a pivotal time and play a hands-on role in shaping the future of our substation and switching operations.
As our Substation and Switching Lead, you’ll play a key role in the operation and development of our HV network. You’ll:
- Carry out substation switching for planned and unplanned work in line with all safety procedures
- Perform inspection, testing, and maintenance of HV equipment (e.g. RMUs, reclosers, voltage regulators)
- Lead by example: mentor and train others to safely carry out switching operations and build internal capability.
About you
You will have:
- EWRB registration with a current practicing licence and an NZQA Level 4 Certificate in Electricity Supply (Level 5 preferred but not essential)
- A minimum of five years as a qualified electrician, ideally within high voltage electricity distribution
- Expertise in substation switching, HV equipment maintenance, and pre-commissioning of new assets
- Experience in training and mentoring team members to develop skills and support a safe, reliable workplace
- A strong commitment to health and safety, always prioritising best practices, and consistently upholding the highest standards of integrity.
Application process
We run a structured recruitment process, including pre-employment vetting. To apply, you must have the right to work permanently in New Zealand without restrictions and be currently in Aotearoa New Zealand. We are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this position.
