    Morning All

    SM-EI states in <b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>PE
    3.2011
    <i style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>When working in
excavations, safety helmets shall be worn.

We have had a query if cable trenches or joint pits are considered excavations (especially when they are reasonably shallow)? We are currently using first principle……. if in doubt wear your hard hat.

    People’s thoughts?

    Stephen.

    Hi Steve

My thoughts are that using first principle does eliminate doubt around depths, positioning, work type (whether there is any OH works taking place) and complacency just not wearing a hard hat. They are there to protect the individuals on an active site from being accidently hit in the head it doesn’t have to be OH work once you have bent over in a trench it could be your mate knocking something off a pillar, a RMU or the side of a trench.

    Cheers Dave

    Hi Stephen,

We require a hard hat for all work sites including excavations, trenches, pits etc, irrespective of depth. We have made an exception when working inside substation buildings, cabinets, and confined or constricted environments where hard hats may restrict access as determined by a risk assessment. In that case, bump caps are worn instead. This has worked well to date.

    Cheers
