Friday after work drinks.

    Good afternoon, all.

On Monday, we sat down with Site Safe and St John and completed The Mental Health First Aid course.

What a great course and it certainly got the brain working and gave a whole new perspective on mental health and what we can do to help others who may fall into the bottomless pit of not only depression, but other illnesses that can affect so many people on a daily basis.

One of the things that was mentioned during the course was how males struggle to speak up, and that providing a safe relaxed atmosphere helps to get those conversations going.

And that is where the old Friday beers come into play. This was stopped here a few years ago.

My question is. What are others doing in this space?

Are they still relevant in today’s space?

Can we still do this safely?

I personally think we can, if we put the correct measures in place and risk access it.

I am very interested in people’s thoughts on this, and if you still provide this, and how you keep it safe and enjoyable for all staff.

Please send me an email if you would like to discuss this further.

    Thanks, Rodie.

    Hi Rodie

You are dead right = when we used to do this, people talked more openly as they wound down at the end of the week, and we got the most honest conversations.

We don’t do this at my current workplace, and I can’t see us changing – not just for D&A reasons but we also run a 9-day fortnight and logistically it would not work for us.

However, at a previous employer we had company-provided takeaways (covering our host responsibilities) and drinks after an end-of-month briefing which worked well – interestingly we found that staff attitudes changed and they went from a ‘finish all the beers in the fridge’ mentality to a point where we were buying twice as much soft drink as beer (helped by only providing a certain number of drinks per person, and drivers of company vehicle were zero alcohol) and everyone left within an hour.

So, it can be done safely……. it just depends if the company has the courage to step up, and the internal culture can support it.

    Cheers

    Stephen
