Good morning all. We have an emerging issue with the discovery of old (possibly around 70 yo) conductors that have a cambric/fabric cover that is impregnated with a lead-based resin. We have been removing this conductor as a part of planned maintenance and testing has shown lead concentrations in this covering. The conductors identified are LV and typically between 10mm2 and 35mm2.

We have brought in outside expertise to help determine the exposure risks and decide appropriate actions for safety .

We have not be able to find any manufacturing information on this product, but it is possible that it was manufactured in the UK.

We are keen to see if other EDBs have identified this conductor on their networks and want to know what measures they have implemented to safely manage it.

    Hey Scott,

I have asked around, but apparently we haven’t got anything like this on the network. I was advised cable mechanic’s work with Lead covered cables,
practically daily and we have heard of no issues from our contractors, however safety measures are in place when they are cutting through the lead covers, which are probably quite different to resin based.

    Cheers
