We have four rated steel suspension rigs that fit into the end of the truck mounted crane. During our latest external live line audit, the auditor and I had a discussion around using the rig above the conductors and MAD’s. Their thoughts were NZECP 34 Table 6 would apply – 1 metre MAD. My opinion was Section 5.5.1 of NZECP 34 applied. “Where the operator of any mobile plant is a competent employee working on, or in the proximity
of, an overhead electric line, the approach distances may be reduced in accordance with the safety
practices determined by the overhead electric line owner.”

This would also infer NZECP 46 applied. Thoughts?

As an aside, who is using this type of steel suspension rig and what are you using for insulators; 66kV polymers in a V formation or 600mm link sticks or something else?

Look forward to some replies 😎

And off a steel arm Dave? If so, how long are your link sticks? 600mm or 1 metre?

Bill, we have an NCLW meeting this Friday, I have added your query to the agenda, and will be asking them to respond to questions on the forum.
