Hi All,

Appreciate feedback on what qualifications (if any) others are requiring of their staff undertaking Asset Inspections?

This includes underground and overhead assets (entry to service boxes etc)

    Regards

    Shaun

    Hey ya Shaun

We currently use the following mix, for overhead we use a mix of ex linestaff and also a couple of non technical people (non registered). For underground we use registered persons as they’re generally taking lids off pillars / opening LV ends of TX etc.

    Cheers

      Thanks Graeme,

What sort of registration class are you predominantly working with for the UG side of things?

Ours are a mix. Registered and non-registered. LMD’s predominantly. Any one undertaking an electrically at risk task are suitably trained, i.e. visual inspections in pillars and transformers and earth testing

      Thanks Bill,

So for the visual inspections are you saying they are potentially well trained, but not necessarily an EWRB registered employee?

We are currently training our asset inspectors and they have completed their ESI Level 2, now we are trying to decide whether they need to obtain a further qualification or just be suitably trained in hazard/risk assessment and the correct level of protection in each situation. They would be visually inspecting only, no repairs or maintenance.

      Thoughts?

    Hi Shaun

This boils down to the requirements of ECP34 Section 9 . A person is required to be electrically competent to work within the reduced MAD of an exposed live part.

As Graham noted above, this is often the case when opening pillar boxes and TXs, but not so much with other equipment.

<font face=”inherit” style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>A secondary benefit is that immediate<font face=”inherit” style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”> repairs can be made to make safe if the worker is appropriately<font face=”inherit” style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”> electrically<font face=”inherit” style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”> registered. We generally used Electricians , but LV underground is within the scope of a Line Mechanic.

    Cheers
