    Hi All

    As part of the SSPG work programme in 2022/23 we completed our review of the EEA Guide for Competency (Safety Refreshment) Programmes (the Guide). As a result of this review the SSPG is recommending to industry that:

    • The Guide is archived;
    • SM-EI rule RC 1.3081 (1.204) is updated to read (new text in bold): General competency of workers shall be regularly assessed and maintained with refresher training, consistent with agreed industry practice and regulatory requirements; and,
    • New SM-EI Rule RC 1.308* be added: Electrical workers should undertake refresher training in electrical safety, testing, first aid and emergency procedures annually. The frequency of this refresher training could be extended if a work type risk assessment results in low risk. The maximum period between refresher training shall not exceed two years.

    Email Admin@EEA.co.nz if you have any additional feedback prior to these changes – we would appreciate your comments.

    Hi Graeme,

    I missed seeing this last year, where is it currently at?

    Do you see the ongoing validation/current competency assessment of everything else that was in the refresher document as being captured within the ENA CCF competency validation process from here on or elsewhere?

    Also, if it’s only a recommendation why not just stick with the gazetted refresher prescription requirements so we don’t end up back where we are which is different networks requiring yearly refreshers while others have 2 yearly? (We currently have annual refreshers as we were following the various guides and every EWRB off-year we do our own internal non St John first aid, basic testing etc)

    If we as an industry think it should be 12 monthly then why don’t we just have it amended?

    Just a query, as we have already had enough issues trying to comply with EWRB/St John changes and muddying the water with 12 and/or 24 months seems unnecessary *shrugs shoulders*
