HV Switching errors

Counties Energy have had a number of HV switching errors. Some errors by switchers, some by NOC. We use a paper switching sheet that is held by NOC and the person carrying out switching. It seems many of the errors are caused by people missing steps in the process, or carrying out the wrong actions. We are having an external review of our switching procedures being carried out to see if there are any interim improvements that can be carried out before our new supervisory system is rolled out (a rather lengthy process)

Can anyone share what they have done to reduce or eliminate HV switching errors, from either the field staff or Network Operation Control.

apologies for an oversimplification of what is very complicated at times. I’m aware that there will be different generations of process and software in use but any suggestions or commentary would be useful.

    Hey Chris,
A good place to start is the EEA Guide – Switching Instructions and Communications guide – available on the Knowledge Network.
We had a few issues a number of years ago and really locked down on the voice protocols and following procedures, we also don’t allow the issuing of multiple switching steps.

Maybe a better forum for this issue would be the Regional Operational Groups CNOG & NINO.

I agree with Simon Parker – switching is the bread and butter of the two forums he mentions.

We have also had some switching errors over recent years: most commonly errors made in the field by operators carrying out the wrong task, or operate the wrong device.

Next week, we are getting a human factors consultant in to understand how we operate…
