Hi Craig,
As Graeme mentioned, it does depend on the role and what you consider safety/refresher training and where the training is to be undertaken e.g. in the field during the normal course of work or removing employees from the field for specific training.
It doesn’t take long to blow through 40 hours if you are undertaking training off-job.
We do a mixture of Forklift (0.5 day), LUV (1 day), 4WD offroad (2 days), HV & LV switching (0.5-1 day), EWRB competency course (1 day), Level 2 First Aid (1 day), Plant cert training (1 day), Internal company specific safety day (1 day), chainsaw (1 day), heavy 4WD offroad (1 day), network competency course (1 day), cable location training (1 day), traffic management (3-5 days), and some other less critical training e.g. standards and policy familiarisation training/awareness e.g. network design and earthing standards, LMS and internal IT systems familiarisation etc.
Looking at the various refresher frequencies we have it would work out @50 hours yearly, not including any contingency for refresher training post ICAM/incident event which happens occasionally.
We are looking at ways of increasing our on-job observations/evaluations to limit the non-chargeables without decreasing the value of the training or interrupting the workflow too much, sometimes off-job is simply a far better option.
Regards
Shaun
