Start Your Assignment

25 March 2024

This section includes everything you need to complete your assignment.

We strongly recommend you read through the guide first, and ensure you understand the tasks to be completed before you begin any design work. Then, we suggest you download the site information and both of the review forms, so you can access them easily from your files.

An example project using a different scenario is also provided.

Assignment Guide

The assignment guide explains what you are required to do for your assignment, and how you will be marked.

Role Assignments

Read this document to find out which design set you will be using, and who you will be Peer Reviewing, and acting as Safety Reviewer for.

Site Information

As built information and pole specifications are provided below, while photos may be accessed through the media folder.

Peer Review Form

Use this form to complete your Peer Review for another Designer.

SiD Review Form

Use this form to complete your Safety in Design (SiD) Review.

Example Project

This provides an example of the kind of information that might be included in your design summary and construction information. An example SiD Review is also provided.

For completeness, the design summary includes checks for phase-to-phase clearances. These could be included in your work but are not specifically required since these calculations are covered in the OLD-010 Design Principles course. Otherwise, it is specifically tailored to the requirements of the assignment. Generally real-world projects will require designers to consider other line components, not just the conductors in isolation.

Excel-based calculations were used as the principal engineering tool and Neara has been used to provide a small number of quality checks. This approach was taken to demonstrate that hand calculations or Excel-based calculations can be used to complete a design. Typical practice however is to complete engineering design using line design software and perform any quality verification checks using hand calcs or an Excel-based tool.

Detailed site survey information, including site photos and measurements, are not included but can be made available on request. The actual calculations used are also not included but can be provided.
