“I would love to use the skills I have gained in control systems to contribute to the electricity industry when I complete my studies.”

Please introduce yourself in one sentence.
I am a commerce and mechatronics engineering student at the University of Auckland interested in music, reading, films, as well as the intersection of electronics and mechanics.

What inspired you to study electrical engineering?
Math and physics were my favourite subjects throughout high school, and I chose to study engineering at the University of Auckland so that I could continue to study the subjects I enjoyed the most. Faced with the decision of which specialisation to go into, I knew that I loved mechanics but also wanted to complement it with electronics. Mechatronics engineering was the perfect way to get the best of both worlds. I enjoy learning about how electrical and mechanical components can work together to solve problems.

What would you consider as your key achievements to date?
A key achievement would be my Part IV Research Project on the validation of path-tracking control systems for driverless Formula SAE. The Formula SAE competition has an autonomous vehicle category and my project seeks to test the performance of path-tracking control systems using motion capture on a scale car. On completion of the project, I hope that the research will help the University of Auckland Formula SAE team remain competitive and contribute to the broader development of autonomous vehicles. And of course, the Electricity Engineers’ Association Scholarship is another achievement that I am proud of!

What role do you want to play in the future of the electricity industry?
As a mechatronics engineering student, I have developed an interest in control systems. I would love to use the skills I have gained in control systems to contribute to the electricity industry when I complete my studies. As a commerce student, I am interested in business and an entrepreneurial career. I hope to use my mechatronics engineering background to innovate on electricity utilisation and create value for New Zealanders.

What is the most important piece of advice you would give to students?
Take care of yourself. Your studies are important, so it is imperative that you set yourself up for success. This can be by making sure to eat well. Getting plenty of sleep and making time for exercise are important too. While studying can present its challenges, it is important to take opportunities to have fun as well. Spend time with friends and family. Partake in a hobby or pursue other interests. Taking care of yourself will help you perform well in your studies while letting you enjoy the journey too
