Seed Project: assessment, findings and recommendations – published April 2025
This report documents the approach, methodology and results of a small scale trial trial into the installation and functionality of smart devices in homes. and includes recommendations for the larger trial planned for later this year.
The FlexTalk Seed Project is a collaboration between the EEA and Energy Efficiency and Conservation Association (EECA). The project was designed to explore and test the practical application of installing and signalling smart devices to enable demand flexibility in New Zealand.
The SEED project builds on the foundational work of the original FlexTalk project, the Demand Flexibility Common Communications Protocol Project (2024), which examined open communication protocols used between flexibility suppliers and end use devices in consumer homes. The findings of the small scale trial will be used to inform the larger trial planned for later this year.

National and international flexibility scan – published March 2025
The flexibility scan provides a summary of 88 flexibility projects underway and completed, across Aotearoa and internationally.
The work was completed by EA Technologies on behalf of FlexTalk to assist EDBs, policy makers and participants as the sector transitions to clean energy.
The flexibility scan includes:
- a searchable spreadsheet of projects separated into Aotearoa and international, the Flexibility Projects in Aotearoa and Internationally March 2025
- a summary report that presents key findings and insights alongside takeaways for decision makers, FlexTalk International Flexibility Scan Mar 2025, and
- radar charts showing the different areas and concentration of focus across the projects
Standardisation and Interoperability – published February 2025
The future of New Zealand’s electricity system depends on interoperability and standardisation—ensuring that consumer-owned energy devices, networks, and the grid can work together seamlessly. Standardisation unlocks smarter grid integration, supports plug-and-play solutions for new technologies, maximises consumer value through vendor choice and market competition, and ensures reliable, scalable, and secure demand flexibility.
Our Standardisation Broadsheet provides key information on how we enable demand flexibility through industry-wide alignment on connection, communication, and behavioural standards to achieve interoperability.
