The Future of Smart Energy in NZ: FlexTalk’s Journey to 100+ Connected Homes

June 4 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Join us for an insightful webinar detailing the journey and key learnings from the FlexTalk Seed project, which is now scaling up to connect over 100 homes with smart technology.

We’ll share how this initiative, in partnership with TLC’s Community Solar Initiative, is paving the way for consumers to effortlessly optimise their energy use.

During this session, you’ll discover:

  • How open standards enable seamless communication between energy systems and devices
  • The tangible benefits of smart technology for energy optimisation in homes
  • Real-world experiences in the installation and setup of smart devices
  • Recommended products and connection methods for successful deployments
  • Key feedback from both the installers and the homeowners involved
  • Our plan to scale demand flexibility across Aotearoa, including the technology and approach for connecting 100+ homes

What is FlexTalk?

FlexTalk is a collaborative program led by the EEA and EECA, uniting industry partners to explore and implement solutions for demand flexibility.  Our work empowers businesses, consumers, and service providers to actively participate in a smarter electricity grid.  Previous FlexTalk phases have successfully tested open communication protocols like OpenADR. Read more.

The FlexTalk Seed project provided crucial practical experience in installing and managing smart devices including home energy management systems (HEMS) and hot water/AC monitoring and control in residential settings, setting the stage for larger-scale deployments. HEMS act as a central hub, connecting appliances and energy resources to optimise electricity use, aiming to reduce costs.

Phase 3 is currently underway, focusing on installing HEMS in over 100 homes in collaboration with The Lines Company. We are applying the valuable lessons learned from our earlier phases to deliver tangible benefits to consumers at scale.

Speakers

Dr. Stuart Johnson (EEA), Connie Dunbar (EEA/Assurity Consulting), Terry Paddy (Cortexo), Romesh Anandaraja (Ivory Egg)
