    Hi everyone,

We are currently reviewing our process and requirements for close approach applications; our current focus is the competency training of the named safety observer, ESR 2010, Regulation 17, Maintaining safe distance, refers to NZECP 34, sections 5 and 9.

Interested to see what our EDB’s are doing in this area and what requirements you have regarding competency.

    Hi Phil

In one of the Australian states their version of Worksafe actually licenses safety observers and has a public register (this came up at an EEA Live Line forum years ago) it would be great to have the same thing here!

Currently it is too easy for third party employers to deem their safety observers competent without any evidence of decent training.

There are two unit standards for Safety Observers, but one is very specific and the other may be too generic:

17596: Demonstrate knowledge of safety observer responsibilities in the workplace.

32175: Act as a safety observer in utility arboriculture.

Hope this helps – feel free to ring?

    Stephen
