Was this in respect to test equipment (calibration) or to portable appliance safety?

For test equipment it probably comes down to manufacturer recommendations. AS/NZS 4836 7.3 just says check before use.

For portable appliances go with Table 4 from AS/NZS 3760 but also consider Table 3 form AS/NZS 3012 if you are caught by the scope of AS/NZS 3012 (1.1). Note most field work would be considered in scope of 3012 by virtue of laying cables (e) and earthmoving work (f).
