I believe that electrical engineering is the path that will allow me to engage in a career dedicated to creating a cleaner future for our country.
Please introduce yourself in one sentence.
I’m a Christchurch local who is deeply passionate about renewable energy, learning and the outdoors.
What inspired you to study electrical engineering?
I have always been interested in sustainability and solving complex problems. I believed that electrical engineering is the path that would allow me to engage in a career dedicated to creating a cleaner future for our country. I also enjoy working with people and engineering was a field that could further develop my interpersonal skills throughout my career. The reason I want to work in the power industry is due to the immense changes that have to occur to transition more sustainable energy sources.
What would you consider as your key achievements to date?
I am currently the chairperson for the UC IEEE student branch. Our branch aims to connect students with industry professionals, provide academic opportunities and host social events for the electrical and computer engineering cohort.
I have also been a Residential Assistant in the Women in Engineering Residential Program for Year 12 high school girls, known as WiE CAN. This program offers exposure to the engineering field through interactive workshops. I thoroughly enjoyed being apart of an initiative that encourages more young women to consider a career in engineering.
What role do you want to play in the future of the electricity industry?
I have a graduate role at Power System Consultants (PSC), starting in 2025. My role includes system studies for near-term and long-term planning for Power Network projects. I hope to continuously develop my skills in this field to hopefully play an important role in the power system analysis space in my future career. My other focus will be to perform generator testing and commission, which will develop my technical skills.
What is the most important piece of advice you would give to students?
Always be willing to chase after the opportunities that are presented to you, as I have learnt that they may lead to new experiences and personal growth.
