“I aim to contribute to the transition towards 100% sustainable energy and the development of energy policies within the electricity industry”

Please introduce yourself in one sentence.
I’m a final-year electrical engineering student at the University of Canterbury, with a passion for renewable energy generation.

What inspired you to study electrical engineering?
My inspiration to study electrical engineering began in Year 9 when I developed a keen interest in electronics. This interest developed into a passion for power engineering after my second-year internship at the EPECentre.

What would you consider as your key achievements to date?
My key achievements include mentoring incoming electrical engineering students and serving in leadership roles such as Board Member of the Power Engineering Excellence Trust and Executive Treasurer on the IEEE UC Student Branch committee.

What role do you want to play in the future of the electricity industry?
I aim to contribute to the transition towards 100% sustainable energy and the development of energy policies within the electricity industry. My upcoming graduate role at Meridian Energy will be the first step in this journey.

What is the most important piece of advice you would give to students?
Be bold! Ask questions and seek mentorship from experienced professionals; it’s a small industry in Aotearoa, and everyone is keen to help you. Remember that it’s perfectly okay to learn from an internship that you don’t enjoy a particular type of work; these experiences help you understand what you are genuinely passionate about and guide your career path accordingly.
